Do you want to be a woman of God's Word?
Deep down, I believe many of us long for this to be true. Yet, almost immediately, doubt begins to take hold. We think things like:
“Does this mean I need to spend hours in Bible study every day?
Wouldn't I have to know everything about the Bible?
Or memorize most of it?
I'd probably need to go to seminary first."
We often create an unattainable gold standard of what a woman grounded in God’s Word looks like, setting ourselves up to feel like we fall short.
But what if you considered what it means for you to be a woman in God's Word? What if you let go of this gold standard mentality, rested in God’s grace, and committed to coming to the Word steadily—even imperfectly?
This prayer, written by Rachel Jancovich, beautifully encapsulates that desire:
Lord, make me more like you. Let me understand more of you. Show me my weakness that I might hold on to your strength. Lord, make me into a woman of your word, and in doing so make me part of your glorious kingdom work here on earth. Equip me to see more of you every day until I am in your presence.
In Women of the Word you'll find a clear and concise plan to equip your study of Scripture and transform your heart.

Summary
In these chapters, Jen Wilkin challenges us to shift our mindset about the Bible and how we approach studying it. She helps us understand why Bible study is essential, then outlines a method to guide us in studying with purpose and thinking rightly about the text. There aren’t any reflection questions or extra resources, which suggests that, after reading, we’re meant to dive in and start applying what we’ve learned.
My Take: Study With Patience
Through my years of studying Scripture, I’ve found that my biggest struggle is often rushing. Many days, I’m filled with an agenda, a to-do list, or places to be, reminding me of the limitations of my humanity. I can only be in one place at a time, and I have responsibilities to manage.
This rushed and distracted mindset isn’t helpful when it comes to studying the Bible. It often leads me to forget to pray, listen, contemplate, and meditate. I’m sure many of you can relate.
When Jen talks about studying with patience, I’m reminded first of the necessity to pause and slow down—to take a few deep breaths and remember God’s presence with me. Next, to embrace the fact that sometimes I may not immediately “get it” or feel confused about certain passages. This questioning is a vital part of the learning process.
In his book Fruitful Theology, Ronni Kurtz shares a thought from theologian Matthew Levering who, “described the process of growing in Christian knowledge well when he said that contemplating God requires “the limp of Jacob and the awe of Moses.”’The “limp” symbolizes the struggle of grappling with our understanding, while “awe” captures our aim—to know and enjoy God.
We won’t sit down and absorb all knowledge without effort and perseverance; growth is a long-term journey. Our transformation will one day happen in the twinkling of an eye, but until then, it’s through God’s grace that we intentionally and patiently show up in faith.
As we dive into Scripture, becoming women of God’s Word, let’s approach our study with patience and grace. How can you intentionally create space for deeper understanding in your time with God this week?
My Recommendation
Women of the Word is a must-read for any Christian woman looking to deepen her Bible study. If you’ve never learned how to study the Bible, this resource provides a simple and clear plan to help you get started. And don’t worry—Bible study is even more fruitful when done in fellowship with others. So gather a friend or two and work through it together as you take your first steps into deeper study.
For Bible teachers, this book is essential. Make sure you’ve read it and are applying its principles to your own teaching. Equip your group by teaching these concepts so they can continue to study and grow on their own as well.
I highly recommend Women of the Word for every Christian woman seeking to engage with Scripture in a meaningful way!

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. (Heb. 4:12)
